After each weekend we take a look at the major incidents to examine and explain the process both in terms of VAR protocol and the Laws of the Game. Possible offside: Ramsey on winning goal What happened: In the 41st minute, Jacob Ramsey scored the only goal of the game. There was a check for offside against the Aston Villa player. VAR decision: No offside, goal stands. VAR review: A strange situation for fans, because on the face of it few would have considered an offside offence. The initial attempt by Ollie Watkins was palmed onto the crossbar by Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, with the ball coming back out to Ramsey to score from close range. Ramsey was undoubtedly in an offside position when Watkins headed the ball, but the goal stood because it was judged Mohammed Salisu deliberatel...

UEFA considering plans to replace European Supercup with new tournament

Image
UEFA considering plans to replace European Supercup with new tournament Europe’s organising football body UEFA wants to organise a tournament with an invitee from a singular North American league, Major League Soccer. According to the Mail, as per Diario AS, UEFA are considering plans to replace the European Supercup with a new four-team tournament, as they seek to increase their income. The tournament would consist of four teams in similar format to that of the Spanish Supercup currently. The invited teams would consist of the winners of the Champions League, Europa League, the Europa Conference League and MLS. It would be a summer tournament and there is potential for the matches to be taken out of Europe, as UEFA pursue fresh audiences. While the idea of an MLS side is clearly a move to raise as much finance as possible, it makes little sense for the winner of a domestic tournament outside of Europe to win the prize of competing against Europe’s three competition winners.
